How to file your dormant accounts – Companies House

All corporations registered at Companies House are legally obligated to submit their accounts, irrespective of their trading status.

For those non-trading corporations that have remained dormant since their inception, the easiest method to file accounts is via the WebFiling service. This tutorial should only serve as an outline, so ensure that the data and numbers you use while filing your accounts are specific to your organization.

How to file your dormant accounts

To archive your inactive accounts you must follow the steps described below:

Upon signing in, you’ll see a brief summary of your company.

Make sure the date of the next expected set of accounts matches with the submission date of the accounts you’re filing. If a change in this date exceeding seven days is necessary, simply click the ‘Change accounting reference date’ link. You must, however, wait for official confirmation that your reference date has been adjusted prior to submitting your accounts.

If the date is accurate, click the ‘File company accounts’ button.

On the ‘Choose your accounts’ page, opt for the ‘Dormant company accounts’ choice. After reading through the requirements, confirm that your business can file this type of accounts, then click the ‘File dormant company accounts’ button.

Balance Sheet

The balance sheet is auto-populated with the anticipated submission date for the accounts. This date can be adjusted by up to one week on either side. Select the relevant currency and fill in the necessary fields. Enter the figures for the current year and the one preceding it. For businesses submitting their first-year accounts, only the current reporting period will appear. If there are no available figures, leave the fields blank or enter zero. Avoid entering other digits or punctuation—for example, a dash. The net assets will be automatically totaled. Click on any of the green information icons for further help.

Share Details

Now fill in the details of the number of shares issued. This would include the type of share, which can be entered manually or selected from the list presented upon clicking ‘select’. Proceed by entering the value.

Confirmation

To certify that the company qualifies to file dormant accounts, tick the appropriate boxes. Only tick the box in the balance sheet note if the company has acted on behalf of another party.

Provide the date when the accounts were confirmed, and the name of at least one director. Click ‘Validate and continue’ if all information is correct.

Submission

Review your prepared accounts. For any necessary corrections, backtrack, or select ‘Print’ for record purposes, then click ‘Confirm’ and ‘Submit’ if everything is in order.
