For anyone thinking of buying a new car, a new vehicle or a second-hand car, here is a tutorial on how to find out if a vehicle has an up-to-date MOT.
What is the MOT?
For those who don’t know, the MOT is an annual test that is carried out on all vehicles every year to ensure that the vehicle is in optimum condition and that it can be driven legally.
For those who want to buy a new second hand vehicle, it is very important to know if the MOT of the car you want to buy is up to date or suddenly how many months it has left. Also there you can look at the mileage of the vehicle, the miles it has and you can also see if the vehicle has any problems that were left to be repaired when it was last tested.
So without further ado, let’s get started with this new tutorial.
How do you know if a car has an MOT?
To start with, the first thing you need to know is that to check if the MOT is up to date, we will need the vehicle’s registration number. One website we recommend for looking at options of cars to buy is gumtree.
When you choose the vehicle that you are interested in, the respective photo will show the registration number of this vehicle.
Once we have the vehicle registration number, we then go to the UK government website. The link is as follows:
On the website, click on “Start now”:
You will then have to enter the number of the registration number.
After entering the registration number, all the information about the vehicle will be displayed. In our example, the vehicle we are looking for has already had its MOT expired:
Below you can also find the MOT history information for the respective vehicle:
Here you can see the vehicle information of the past years, how the test has been:
In this example you can see that the last MOT test date was 20 February 2020 with the result that it passed, you can see the mileage, test number and expiry date.
If you are buying a vehicle, we recommend that it has the most recent MOT possible. We hope you found this tutorial useful!
