Today we will be doing a guide on how to apply for an Australian tax file number. Firstly, let’s go over why you need a tax file number, to begin with.
Why do you need a Tax File Number?
Your tax file number also refer to a TFN, is your personal reference number in the tax and super systems. Your TFN is an important part of your tax and super records, as well as your identity, so keep it secure.
Your TFN is yours for life, you keep the same TFN even if you change your name, change jobs, move interstate, or go overseas.
Apply for TFN
Step one, go onto the Australian Taxation Office official website.
Step two, navigate to the online form and fill in required information.
Step three, once form is complete, you have three options as to how you submit the form.
Three Options to Submit the Form
Option one, go to your closest Centrelink office, you will need to have forms of identification, completed application from the Australian Taxation Office, as seen at the start of the tutorial and time, as Centrelink offices have a reputation of being very busy all hours
of the day.

Option two, using the online search engine on the Australian Post office website:
You can type in your postcode. This will display all post offices near you, that you can complete the application, attend an interview at a participating Australia Post outlet within 30 days of completing your online form. You’ll need to take your printed summary and proof of identity to the interview. You’ll need to sign your application at Australia Post, when you complete your interview.
Option three, apply via post. See link in description of where to find application, send your completed TFN application and certified copies of your identity documents to the address listed on the form. Please note, don’t mail your original identity documents to the ATO, they may not be returned to you. So best option is to scan them and attach scanned copies.
