All You Need to Complete Your TFN Declaration

When do we need to complete this form?

When you start working your employer will ask you to complete this form at the beginning of your employment. They may give you a physical copy or they may ask you to download one form the Australian Taxation Office website.

Why we need to complete the form

The informaton you provide in this declaration form will allow your employer to work out how much tax to withhol from payments made to you.

How to complete the form

You will be required to complete 10 questions in section A.

Question 1: You need to fill in your tax file number the australian taxation office have provided to you. If you do not one yet, please feel free to check out our tutorial on how to apply for tfn.

Question 2: Fill in your title, surname, first given name and other given names.

Question 3: Fill in your home address.

Question 4: Fill in your previous surname if you have changed our name. If not, leave it blank.

Question 5: Fill in your email adress.

Question 6: Fill in your date of birth.

Question 7: Select your type of income whether it is a full-time, part-time, labor hire, superannuation or annuity income stream, or casual employment. If you are not sure, please kindly check with your employer or hr department.

Question 8: Select your residency for tax purposes. If you are not sure, please refer to our tutorial on residency test.

Question 9: When to claim tax-free threshold, please select Yes to only one employer if you are earning income from more than one job unless your total income from all sources for the financial year will be less than the tax-free threshold ($18,200 or less). Then you can tick Yes for more than one job but we wouldn´t advise to do that just in case your income suddenly increases if this happens tax withheld may not be enough to cover your tax.

So, which employer should I tick Yes normally. We would suggest you to take Yes to the employer that you are expecting to earn highest income with. Please note that if you are holding a working holiday visa subclass 417 and 462 or you are a foreign tax resident, then you to answer No in this question.

Question 10: Do you have any loan from government? For example Higher Education Loan and Student Star-up Loan. If you are not sure, please kindly check with Australian Taxation Office by calling 13 28 61. Finally, you will need to sign and write the date when you have completed the form.

You don´t have to complete Section B and it is for your employer or payer to complete and submit the form the Australian Taxation Office. If you need any further assistance to complete the form, please feel free to contact Australian Tax Clinics or Australia Taxation Office.

We hope this tutorial will help you to complete the TFN Declaration form. Than you!
